GUAGUA

On a not so serious note I am learning that Jarabacoa is to the DR much like Buena Vista is to Colorado....A SMALL TOWN! Well, it is in reality much larger than Buena Vista but still has the same small town feel. You have to drive almost an hour to get to a movie theater and an eventful evening is normally getting together with friends at someone's house to, of course, EATING! So my friend, Rachel and I decided we should venture out of this small town that we now call home to La Vega. We also brought along with us my dominican hermanita (little sister-Shanell). Since niether of us own a car we had to use the means of public transportation. Dominican public transportation = Una Guagua! Yes...you are asking...what the heck is una guagua. Well, it is a 12 passenger van crammed with almost 18 people that will take you where you need to go. We began the trip with about 15 people and then dropped off a few on the way as well as added a few on the way. Quite an interesting experience. It was HOT and crowded. But hilarious at the same time. The reason we headed to La Vega was in hopes to have a "wal-mart experience." Yes, we needed to shop. So we entered La Sirena. A large building painted bright yellow. When the doors opened we felt the immediate coolness of the air conditioning (something they don't have here in the DR). AWWWW....just like WalMart. We purchased the things we needed and of course paid ridiculous amounts of money just to have a few things from the great US of A. Things like peanut butter that costs almost $4, chocolate chips (that you can not find in Jarabacoa) for more than what they are worth and many other things. It was an experience!
